Accessibility statement
We want everyone to be able to read the site, whatever way and whatever device they use.
Target
Our target is conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA, and with the European standard EN 301 549. The site is partially conformant; the exceptions are listed below.
What we have done
- Semantic structure, headings and a "Skip to content" link.
- Full keyboard use with a visible focus indicator; the document viewer closes with Esc and changes document with the arrow keys.
- Alternative text on every document image and a description of its content on the documents page.
- Colour contrast to WCAG AA in the light and dark themes, which follow your device setting.
- Respect for your system's "reduce motion" setting.
- All content in Greek and English.
- An accessibility toolbar on every page (button at bottom left): text size, high contrast, greyscale, readable font, line height, letter spacing, link highlighting, strong focus, pause motion, reading guide, large pointer and text-to-speech.
Known limitations
The documents are scans of historical records, many handwritten or typed a century ago. We give a description of their content, not a full transcription. If you need the text of a document in an accessible format, write to us and we will send it.
The YouTube player on the documentary page belongs to a third party and its accessibility is outside our control.
Text-to-speech uses your browser's voices; some devices have no Greek voice.
Feedback
If you meet a barrier while using the site, write to us at [email protected]. We will reply and fix it as soon as possible.
