About this site
Who is behind this
The site is kept by the Banque d'Orient Shareholders' Community: bearer shareholders who took the case to court and intervened in the proceedings. They live in Greece and abroad. A few have spoken in public under their own names (see the Shareholders page); the personal details of the others are not published.
Method
The case archive holds 1,186 items: Gazette issues and statutes, the 1932 contract, the liquidation ledgers, correspondence of banks and authorities, historical press, share certificates and court documents. This site shows the key ones, giving priority to records of the Greek State, of foreign authorities and of NBG itself. The full register is published in the books.
The facsimiles are taken from the copies filed in court. NBG's positions are given as NBG stated them. The valuations contained in the case file are not reproduced here.
Not the Sorras story
Since 2011 the name of the Banque d'Orient has been publicly tied to Artemis Sorras' claims of "600 billion" and "bonds". Those claims rested on no document and led to criminal prosecutions. We investigated and refuted them publicly from 2013 on; the archive holds the 2014 criminal complaint and the shareholders' notices over the use of the bank's name.
The case on this site is of a different kind: a civil claim by bearer shareholders, resting on a 1932 contract published in the Government Gazette and on records of the Greek State and of NBG itself. It concerns no bonds, has nothing to do with Greek sovereign debt, and asks nothing of anyone outside the courts.
